All your life you’re told forgiveness is for you. But we’re never told why it’s for you. It means you’re working on owning your life.

Forgiveness is nothing less than the way we heal the world. We heal the world by healing each and every one of our hearts. The process is simple, but it is not easy.

This chapter offers an Indian perspective on forgiveness as a facet of emotion. Forgiveness allows non-violence (Ahimsa) to be practised. As a facet of emotion, forgiveness works as a purifier of consciousness. Both seeking and granting forgiveness involve negative and positive emotional changes. Forgiveness also occurs in combination with other human virtues. It strikes a balance and facilitates the resolution of intergroup conflicts. The Indian view posits that forgiveness is the quality of the brave, not the weak. The study of forgiveness has implications for understanding various human conditions and relationships.
